Coronavirus and dogs

Coronavirus

The coronavirus pandemic has had a dramatic impact on all our lives and also the lives of our dogs.  Many dog owners are now working from home but there are many restrictions about how to look after your dog especially in terms of walking your dog and shopping for pet supplies.

What are the dog walking rules during the coronavirus lockdown?

Daily walks provide a dog with mental stimulation, physical exercise and an opportunity to “do it’s business” out in the fresh air.  It is also very good for your mental and physical health.

The current government regulations permit us to leave our home once per day for exercise and pet owners are asked to combine our daily walk with walking the dog.  In other words, you can’t go for a walk in the morning alone and a walk in the afternoon with your dog!  If there are more than two adults in your home, a second person could walk the dog at a different time of the day to you.  This would be great for dogs who usually have two daily walks.

While you are walking your dog, you must observe the social distancing rules of staying at least two metres away from anyone outside your household.  Some parks are advising that dogs should be kept on a lead at all times to adhere to the social- distancing advice.

How can I walk MY dog if I have coronavirus symptoms?

You have to self-isolate for seven days so you will need to ask a friend or neighbour to walk your dog on your behalf but not someone within your household as they have to self-isolate too for 14 days.  Remind this person to wash their hands before and after walking the dog and to keep two metres away from other people and animals.

How can I shop for my dog?

Where possible, shop online for your pet supplies.  The Natural Animal Health web shop has a range of natural products for worms, dog fleas, ticks, lice and stress available to purchase which can be delivered directly to your doorstep.

What about visits to the vet?

Only visit the vet if your dog needs urgent treatment but phone your vet in advance to find out how they organise appointments during the coronavirus lockdown.  Remember to wash your hands for 20 seconds after your visit and stay two metres away from anyone when you visit the vet.

Can I catch coronavirus from a dog?

According to UK government advice published on 31 March 2020, “there is no evidence of coronavirus circulating in pets or other animals in the UK and there is nothing to suggest animals may transmit the disease to humans.”

Continue to adopt good practice of washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds after touching a dog or its lead as well as avoiding touching your mouth and nose.
